Outreach and Mission with Soli
The Soli Outreach team are dedicated to bringing the message of Christ and His Church to schools, and parishes, throughout the Archdiocese of Birmingham. Outreach days are designed to inspire and encourage your young people through participation in activities and workshops around a particular theme. The use of the outreach team provides a fantastic opportunity for a larger number of young people to have exposure to Youth Ministry. In schools he days are constructed around the school timetable, and provide a great bridge between our Youth Centres and your Chaplaincy work. The standard format for these outreach days is to work with a single year group over two days, with half the year on one day and the other half on the second day. If a year group is less than 120 students we can run the programme on a single day. This greatly improves the engagement of the students with the programme workshops, which take place in class groups.
Who we work with:
What we do:
1. Introductory session
This involves an introduction to the outreach team and an opportunity for the theme of the week to be explored. Within this session the young people will be engaged with an opening prayer service and then guided through the time with drama, videos, inspirational talks and icebreakers. This initial session is essential to set the spiritual tone of the day; it is also designed to inspire the young people to fully take part in every aspect of the outreach.
Working with class sized groups, the team will lead workshops to allow the students to actively explore the theme of the retreat and how it applies to them. Workshops involve a large variety of different things, including discussion work, looking at scripture and creative activities. The aim of workshops is for students to have the opportunity to engage with their faith in a new way.
3. Liturgies and times of prayer
Our ministry at Soli is centred on a life of prayer, similarly our outreach days are also anchored by prayer. We begin the day with prayer in the introductory session. It is important for the end of the day to also be a time of liturgy. Holy Mass has been celebrated to commemorate the outreach days within schools, but this is dependent on Chaplain’s availability and the schools wishes.
Themes for outreach retreat days
I am a link in a chain
By the end of this day young people will have reflected on what the word "mission” means to them individually, but also as a community. Using Cardinal Newman’s Mission Prayer young people will reflect and react to what their vocation means to them.
Particularly useful for students in Yr 9 moving into choosing their options for GCSEs
This day encourages the young people to reflect on hero qualities that can be seen in others, but more importantly seen in themselves. The day will also look at our weaknesses, and how, in spite of these, God has still chosen us for a special purpose in life
Great for all year groups
We are God’s Masterpiece
Based on St Paul’s description of us in his letter to the Ephesians - "We are God's Masterpiece" (Eph 2:10) the young people will focus on the importance of us being made in God's image.
Great for lower school year groups
